Title:

Root Beer Test

Problem Scenario:

Is the brand name of root beer affecting the taste?

Broad Question:

Doing a blind taste test with root beer.

Specific Question:

Does brand name effect opinion?

Hypothesis:

It is hypothesized that the brand name will effect opinion on taste.

Variables

Independent Variable:If they know the brand name.

Dependent Variable: There opinion what they likes better.

Variables That Need To Be Controlled: The age of the soda, the temperature of the soda, the amount given to taste.

Vocabulary List That Needs Explanation

General Plan

My general plan for this experiment is to do two different tests. This will show which brand people like better in a blind taste test.

Potential Problems And Solutions: To make sure that kids don't have to much soda.

Safety Or Environmental Concerns

Experimental Design

(add the correct headings from the experimental design page before beginning)

Resources and Budget Table

Two too liter bottles of Root Beer

Data Table

Time Line:

I am thinking about doing the actual test next week and getting the data on the graph.

Background Research

One of the great never-ending debates in the world of personal finance is whether or not name-brand groceries are really worth the extra cost when alternative cheaper store-brand groceries are available. Furthermore, when it comes to edible products, does the quality and taste of name-brand products always justify the price premium, which can often times be as much as 50%? On this topic I learned that in blind taste tests most vote differently then when they know the brand. This may be because they are influenced by the name brand. Most people would usually vote with the name brand because they are influenced by commercials and such. But on a blind taste test some people vote with the store brand. When I researched The topic I found that even though name brand products cost more they taste better.

Detailed Procedure

First I am going to have a taste test were everyone knows what they are tasting. One brand will say "A&W" and the other will say "Hannaford brand Root Bear". They will mark down which one they like better. Then the day after I will have another test but not tell them which brand is which. The they will say which one they liked better. Then I will have two graphs to compare at the end of the experiment.

Data Analysis

Conclusion

The conclusion to my experiment is that the brand name does effect the opinion. I found this because the taste test and the blind taste test had a small difference in the amount of votes.

Discussion

My experiment worked but was far off from my hypothesis. The overall trend of my data was the that most everyone like the same brand when knew the brand and when they didn't. The relation between the variables because there wasn't a big change between the two changes. Yes I answered the question because I saw that the data didn't change very much so brand name does not effect opinion. One problem I had was that I did not have many people to do my experiment. This data could help other people to know which brand is the best root bear to buy. The Hannaford brand could use this data and notice that there root beer is bad and they need to make it better. I could definitely improve this data if i had more people to do the test. These results benefits science because it proves that brand name does effect opinion a small amount.

Benefit to Community and/or Science

This can benefit the Community by people buying the preferred brand in this experiment. The brand that most students liked better in both tests was A&W.

Abstract

Does brand name effect opinion? It is hypothesized that the brand name will effect opinion on taste.
On this topic I learned that in blind taste tests most vote differently then when they know the brand. This may be because they are influenced by the name brand. My general plan for this experiment is to do two different tests. This will show which brand people like better in a blind taste test. The results of my data shows that brand name does effect the opinion of the tasters. This is shown because more people chose Hannaford when they didn't know the brand name then when they did.The conclusion to my experiment is that the brand name does effect the opinion. I found this because the taste test and the blind taste test had a small difference in the amount of votes. I came to my conclusion that brand name does effect opinion.
